Strike action by firefighters at Sellafield nuclear plant has been suspended, following an improved pay offer.

The GMB union has suspended the upcoming strikes on July 24 and July 31, after talks with Sellafield Ltd. management led to an improved pay offer.

Members will now be balloted on the improved offer.

The dispute over pay had been unresolved for years, with last ditch talks taking place between the union and Sellafield Ltd. management earlier this month - where strike action was confirmed.

“Last ditch talks this morning with Sellafield Ltd led to a significantly improved offer being tabled by the company which will now be put to GMB members.

“The planned strike action has therefore been postponed.

“GMB will now ballot members on the new deal as soon as possible.”

– Chris Jukes, GMB Senior Organiser

"The talks were positive, and as a result we have been able to make significant progress towards finding a resolution.

"The GMB are going back to ballot the firefighters and have suspended the strike action that was planned for both Monday July 24th and Monday July 31st.

"This means that the site will continue to operate as normal on Monday.”
