Harsher assault punishment welcomed by emergency services in Cumbria

Emergency services in our region have welcomed a new law giving harsher punishments to people who attack or sexually assault front-line workers.

The UK government is increasing the maximum prison sentence from six months to a year, for common assault.

It's expected to come into force in November.

"What we're saying to the judicial system is support us, and if somebody now assaults a police officer or emergency service personnel worker they should expect to go to prison."
