Woman trapped in overhanging car on Melrose bridge

A 69 year-old woman trapped in a car hanging over a bridge in Melrose has been cut free by firefighters.

The fire service were alerted on Saturday evening to a report of a car hanging over Bow Bridge with a person stuck inside.

Crews from Galashiels and Kelso were sent to the scene at on the A699 at 7.51pm.

They used specialised equipment to stabilise the car before cutting the injured woman free.

Crews used two tirfor winches to stabilise the vehicle and hydraulic cutting gear to extricate one 69-year-old woman who was physically trapped.

The woman was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment to her injuries.

The fire service said no one was else was in the car.

Police said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
