Sheffield City Centre will be lit up this evening - with a bit of help from X Factor stars Matt Cardle and Joe McElderry.

The big switch-on will take place at 5pm, with the singers flicking the switch for the main lights in Barkers Pool. They will then perform on the main stage alongside a variety of acts including Britain's Got Talent finalists Loveable Rogues. For younger guests, stars of Sheffield Theatre's Cinderella will help the Lord Mayor switch on the lights from the Town Hall balcony.

A whole host of festive fun will be on offer throughout the city centre from 1pm. The Peace Gardens will host a winter wonderland for the littlest ones, and Father Christmas will be awaiting visitors in his Fargate Christmas grotto. Children's TV characters and mascots will be at the Town Hall and Pinstone Street.

The Winter Garden will be transformed into an enchanted forest with fairy grottos, storytelling, entertainment and Christmas craft activities, including the making of jam jar lanterns. From 3.30pm all of them will gather in the Garden for a Lantern procession.

Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "The switch on of the Christmas lights in Sheffield is always a fantastic event. With plenty of activities and entertainment planned throughout the day, there will be lots of festive fun for everyone in the City Centre."
