900,000 illicit cigarettes seized in Bradford raid

More than 900,000 illicit cigarettes were found at a storage facility in Great Horton Credit: HMRC

More than 900,000 illicit cigarettes and 150 kilos of hand-rolling tobacco, all believed to be illicit, have been seized in Bradford.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) arrested one man after suspected illegal tobacco worth £260,790 in unpaid duty was found at a shop and a self-storage facility in the city.

HMRC officers, accompanied by a sniffer dog, discovered 928,820 cigarettes and 153 kilos of hand-rolling tobacco at the storage facility, in Great Horton, on 17 March 2017. An estimated 2,000 cigarettes were seized at a shop in Lidget Green earlier the same day.

A 30-year-old man from Bradford was arrested in connection with the seizures and interviewed by HMRC at Trafalgar House Police Station. He was bailed to June pending further enquiries.
