The new bishop of Sheffield has been announced – after the previous nominee was forced to decline the position over his stance on female priests.
The Very Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, who has been the Dean of Liverpool Cathedral for the past five years, will be consecrated at York Minster later in the summer.
It comes after the Rt Revd Philip North eventually turned down the position after fellow clergy objected to comments he made against the ordination of female bishops.
Dr Wilcox said: "There will be much for me to learn, but I am excited about the work which is already underway".
Bishop North said: "He will bring great intelligence, insight and evangelistic energy to the Diocese of Sheffield along with experience of ministry from a wide variety of contexts. I pray that clergy and laypeople of all traditions will be able to unite around his leadership."
