Christmas lights come early for endangered Sheffield trees

Campaigners fighting against council plans to chop down trees in Dore near Sheffield held a night time vigil to keep watch over them.

Supporters of Sheffield Tree Action group say the trees are a local landmark at Christmas time when they are decorated with hundreds of festive lights.

They surrounded the trees, after switching on their lights, to protect them from felling crews who could arrive any day. The council says some trees need to be removed as they are damaging the pavements and road.

One of the campaigners, Ann Anderson, told Calendar they were asking for 'solutions not fellings'.
