Just 10 days into a Christmas drink and drug driving campaign, North Yorkshire police have already arrested 39 drivers for being under the influence at the wheel.

The highest reading of the campaign so far was provided by a 45-year-old man from Catterick, who gave a reading of 128 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - over three and half times the legal limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The driver has been released under investigation as officers continue their enquiries.

So far the campaign has seen 34 men and five women arrested across the region, with the highest number of arrests being made in Scarborough, then York and Harrogate.
