The RSPCA is now investigating.

Inspector Lucy Green said:

This is certainly a very strange and sad situation, and it must be unpleasant for the people who live nearby to think a dead animal has been dumped like this.

“Inside the suitcase with the cockerel’s body was a tea towel and a bath towel, and some hay.

“It’s not easy to estimate the cause of death for certain at this stage, so I’m appealing to anyone who might have any information about him and where he might have come from.

“It’s the responsibility of pet owners and keepers of animals to dispose of their bodies appropriately when the time comes, not leave them in this way for a member of the public to find in a really distressing way.

“I can be contacted on our inspector’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018, where people can leave a message for me, in complete confidence.”
