A record number of people contacted the Leeds based debt charity Step Change in 2018.
In a new report, the charity says it received 657,930 new contacts in 2018, up from 619,946 in 2017.
In most cases financial worries have been put down to a reduction income, such as unemployment, redundancy or illness.
Step Change says single parents are the most affected as calling on the government to do more to prevent younger people from falling into a trap.
One man from Sheffield says his problems began to spiral out of control when he took out a credit card to improve his rating, only then to lose his job.
