A father has appeared in court charged with the murder of his son, who sustained catastrophic injuries as a baby and died of these aged 15.

John Doak, 36, of The Featherworks, Boston, was not asked for a plea during a brief hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court.

The court heard that his son Jack Mitchell was admitted to hospital in 2001 with catastrophic injuries.

He died in March 2016.

Essex Police said that a post-mortem examination found that Jack had died from a pulmonary infection and pneumonia as a result of brain injuries he suffered as a baby.

John Doak was summonsed to Chelmsford Magistrates' Court by post.

He appeared briefly before magistrates on Wednesday morning, then before Chelmsford Crown Court in the afternoon where he was granted bail.

He is due back before the court for a plea hearing on October 16, and a provisional trial date has been set for April 20 with a four-week time estimate.
