Around 600 people could lose their jobs as the ready meal factory Pennine Foods in Sheffield faces closure.

Parent company 2 Sisters Food group says a full strategic review has been done which has shown the operation is "not sustainable for the long-term".

The site continues to be heavily loss-making, and despite major investment in recent years, we are unable to reverse the situation.

Therefore we are now consulting with colleagues on our proposals, which include potential closure of the site. However, we are committed to exploring the full range of options available to us before any final decisions are made.

We do not take this decision lightly and fully understand the impact if this proposal goes ahead. Our primary focus now will be to support our colleagues and their representatives during the consultation process to ensure we reach the best possible outcome for all parties.

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers' Union says staff are being briefed and redundancy consultation notices are being issued to those at the site.

We will be entering into a period of collective consultations with the company to discuss all options & will endeavour to avert the potential closure of the site. The news clearly will be a massive shock to the workforce at the site and not to forget the local community. We as a Union will do all that we can to ensure we support our members through this difficult time.
