The man who killed British backpacker Grace Millane has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 17 years.
The man appeared in Auckland’s high court on Friday morning, and his sentencing was overseen by Justice Simon Moore.
The convicted killer, 28, who still cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty and convicted last November for the December 2018 death.
Grace was four months into travelling around the world when she met up with her killer and was murdered in Auckland.
Her body was found in a suitcase buried on the outskirts of the city.
Her attacker was found guilty in November.
Her attacker was in the dock today as Grace's mother read a victim statement ahead of the sentencing.
Speaking via a video link from her home in Essex, she told him: 'You have ripped a hole in my heart, one that will never be repaired.''
''She said that no sentence will ever match the life sentence that Grace's death has imposed on her family."
