A man who left his girlfriend to die after assaulting her in a street in Halifax has been jailed.

Levi Ogden, 26, was knocked unconscious after being hit by a mobile phone thrown by 27-year-old Lloyd Birkby in the early hours of November 3 last year. He then walked away.

Miss Ogden, a mother of two, was helped by volunteer 'street angels', paramedics and police but died later in hospital.

A court heard there had been a history of domestic violence between the couple.

Birkby, of Langdale Street, Elland, admitted manslaughter and was jailed for five years.

Det Insp Natalie Dawson, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “This case is a tragic reminder to all of what can happen when excessive force is used to try and resolve a situation. Levi’s death was completely unnecessary and demonstrates the perils of people resorting to violence.

“We welcome today’s sentence and hope it can bring Levi’s family some closure knowing the man who caused her death is now behind bars.
