Hull MPs launch fresh plea urging Chancellor to support caravan businesses

Hull MPs Karl Turner, Emma Hardy and Diana Johnson have written to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak demanding support for the region's caravan manufacturers.

The industry, which is based heavily in Hull and East Yorkshire, contributes £9 billion a year to the economy and provides around 20,000 local jobs. The MPs say as the business is seasonal due to the time of year there is "serious risk of collapse" if further support is not provided.

Although caravan manufacturers have benefitted from the furlough scheme, they are reliant on the tourism industry and are not eligible for specific sector support.

The letter goes on to outline how three in 10 companies closed their doors during the 2008 economic crash and predicts the pandemic could cause a "potentially devastating impact on regional employment".

The MPs say urgent action is required to help the businesses.

The Government must be flexible when ending furlough to ensure people in Hull are not put out of work by this pandemic.
