The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a surprise video call to volunteers at a Huddersfield charity to thank them for their work during lockdown.

Conscious Youth helps young people from mainly black and other ethnic minority backgrounds. It was set up in 2016 in response to council cuts and the closure of youth provisions and services within Kirklees.

William’s work with Shout 85258 – a round-the-clock text messaging helpline – was announced to mark Volunteers Week.

A royal source said the Cambridges would be carrying out official events via video calls for the foreseeable future but they were hoping to resume visits in person at some point.
