Police are trying to identify suspects who jumped from a moving HGV lorry on the motorway in North Yorkshire.

At around 1.20am on Friday 3 July, police tried to stop a Mercedes-Benz Axor HGV as it travelled along the A1 north of Leeming Bar, because they thought it looked suspicious.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and less than a minute later, five people dressed in black jumped out of the lorry while it was still travelling in the second lane.

It then left the road and came to a stop on the grass verge.

The suspects ran off across the road into fields towards Little Fencote. Extensive searches were carried out by police dogs and a helicopter, but officers could not locate them.

The HGV has been recovered and seized for forensic examination.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:

Jumping from a moving lorry and letting it crash off the motorway was an extremely reckless act that could have had very serious consequences. Although no suspects have been located at this time, it’s highly likely that our response has disrupted criminal activity overnight. Enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.
