North Yorkshire Police have said that they believe a serious restaurant fire in Harome was started "deliberately".

Emergency services were called to the Michelin Star Restaurant on Wednesday evening just before 10.15pm after a fire started in the building's thatched roof.

Police have said that following examination by police and fire investigation officers they believe the fire was started on purpose.

People who were in the area at the time of the fire are being urged to contact the police with any information.

It is hoped the ground floor of the centuries-old pub has been saved but much of the thatched roof, where the fire started, has been lost.

The pub has regularly featured in lists of the best restaurants and gastropubs in the UK since the arrival of chef and patron Andrew Pern 25 years ago.

People had been in the pub when the fire started, but no one was injured.
