Father and son make Sheffield Eagles history

It's the third round of rugby league's Challenge Cup this weekend and for one family from Sheffield it will be extra special.

Corey Aston, son of Sheffield Eagles head coach Mark Aston, will make his debut against Leigh East at the Don Valley stadium, 15 years after his dad was man of the match as the Eagles shocked the rugby league world beating Wigan in the Challenge Cup final.

Sheffield Steelers - Finnerty not to return

The Sheffield Steelers have confirmed they will not be renewing the contract of head coach Ryan Finnerty.

Finnerty has been in charge of the club for two seasons. He joined the Steelers as a player in 2006 and remained with the club for two and a half years playing 188 games and scoring 64 goals before spells back in North America and Cardiff.Finnerty returned to Sheffield as player coach in 2011.

“It’s with a sad heart that we have taken this decision but as a club we felt we had no alternative. Everyone who works alongside Ryan knows the effort he has put into trying to bring success back to this organisation and we are both thankful and grateful to him for that.

"As a club we have taken the decision to move on and not to re-new Ryan’s deal for next season. We are actively looking for an experienced head coach to come in and run the hockey side of this business.

“We again thank Ryan and wish him well in his future.”

– Tony Smith, Sheffield Steelers owner
