Colley: Provocation no excuse for altercation

The non-league footballer who attracted worldwide headlines after his confrontation with a supporter was caught on film has given his first television interview, and says he feels "embarrassed" by his actions.

Karl Colley, who was club captain, was sacked by Goole AFC after he went into the stands and allegedly tried to punch an away supporter when he was sent off against Coalville last Saturday.

The Football Association has now charged him with improper conduct. Colley says he was provoked, but that it is no excuse.

A non-league footballer who was sacked by his club after an altercation with a fan went viral has said he is embarrassed by his behaviour.

Former Goole AFC captain Karl Colley was sacked after he confronted an away supporter in the stands after being sent off in Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Coalville in the Evostik South league.

He says he reacted to severe provocation, but also says it's no excuse:


FA charge former Goole captain

The Football Association have charged former Goole AFC captain, Karl Colley following an altercation with a fan at the weekend.

In a statement the FA said:

Karl Colley, formerly of Goole AFC, has been charged by The FA for improper conduct in relation to his behaviour in or around the 54th minute of the match between Goole and Coalville Town on 25 January 2014. The incident, which followed his dismissal during the game, fell outside the jurisdiction of the match officials. Colley has until 5 February 2014 to respond to the charge.

Goole captain released after "deplorable incident"

In a statement of their website, Goole AFC say captain Karl Colley has now left the club.

After the deplorable incident at today's home game against Coalville Town, we can confirm that the player responsible has been released by the club. We are a family club and incidents of this nature have no place in football and will not be tolerated at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.The club acted quickly and decisively and released the player with immediate effect and as such the player in question will never play for our football club again.

We apologise to each and every supporter at the game today and whilst as a club, we can't legislate for incidents of this nature, we will not tolerate them from anyone.

Goole captain in altercation with fan

Goole AFC have told Karl Colley he will never play for them again after he was involved in an altercation with a visiting fan - 19 years to the day since Eric Cantona's infamous assault on a supporter.

Colley, listed as a 30-year-old defender on Goole's website, was sent off in their Evo-Stik South game with Coalville at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

As he left the field, video footage showed Colley make three attempts to confront a dissenting fan, appearing to throw a punch at him on the second occasion.
