City of Lincoln Council’s Executive has been asked to agree a 12 per cent increase in fees for stallholders at Lincoln Christmas Market 2014.
The council says the increases are being proposed to "ensure the council is able to continue running the event safely and successfully."_

“The additional income will be used to contribute to the market’s infrastructure, including an improved layout in the castle area, and to fund essential lighting towers needed following the short power cut at last year’s event.
“It will also be used to improve the visitor experience and support the running of the market, which brings huge benefits to the city.
“We have recommended that park and ride prices are frozen and are also proposing that discounts for local traders will remain the same: 20 per cent discount for stallholders from within Lincoln and 15 per cent less for Lincolnshire-based traders.
"Charity stalls will continue to receive a 50 per cent discount, and craft or fair-trade stalls would pay 10 per cent less.”
The council says 300,000 visitors to the market spend around £12 million and that it generates a trade boost of more than a quarter for shops compared to other weeks around Christmas.
Traders at this year's Lincoln Christmas Market will pay 12 per cent more for pitches amid a predicted £78,000 income shortfall.
It comes after fewer stalls last year - due to the refurbishment of Lincoln Castle - and coach bookings meant income was down £67,000 from the predicted £561,000 to £494,000.
Last year's market made a surplus of just £4,000 against the budgeted £81,000. Running costs were estimated at £16,000 but the actual cost to the City of Lincoln Council was £83,000.
The 12 per cent rise in fees and charges due to be approved by the council's executive on Monday, June 16 would generate £316,000 for the 2014 market
