Body recovered from Humber is female, police confirm

Detectives working on identifying the identity of a body, which was recovered from the Humber Estuary yesterday (Wednesday, March 20), have confirmed its sex as female.

In a statement issued this afternoon, almost 24 hours after the RNLI retrieved the body from Spurn Point, Humberside Police said "those that needed to be made aware" had been informed.

"Following the recovery of a body from the Humber Estuary yesterday afternoon, we can confirm the deceased is a woman.

"The post-mortem examination is underway and is expected to continue into the evening.

"We have been in contact and informed those that needed to be made aware of the recovery.

"Formal identification is still yet to take place and we remain unable at this stage to confirm her identity."

Newark body thought to be missing Donal Whelan

The body of a man found in the River Trent in Newark is thought to be that of missing man Donal Whelan.

A body was discovered by a member of the public this morning following searches by the Nottinghamshire Police to find Mr Whelan.

Police are exploring the circumstances surrounding his death but it is not thought to be suspicious.

Mr Whelan, 49, was reported missing on April 15.
