West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched a hard hitting
campaign to prevent moorland fires.
At its height, black smoke could be seen billowing into the air from miles around and the A62 - which connects Huddersfield to Manchester.
Damage affected an area of moorland around 1.5km
A major fire that broke out at Marsden Moor last night has now died down but crews will remain on the scene for most of today.
A major moorland fire has broken out above Marsden in West Yorkshire.
We are being urged to take extra care if we are on the region’s moorlands. It is because it will be another warm weekend, following weeks of dry conditions.
Last April there was a huge blaze on Ovenden Moor near Halifax, which destroyed huge areas of biologically diverse moorland. It took weeks for firefighters to put it out and cost thousands of pounds.
Now, people are being asked not to start any sort of fire, but also a stray cigarette end, a spark from a pipe or even the rays from the sun on discarded drinks bottles.
