9,000 Peak District homes left without power

Thousands of homes were left without power after heavy snow and blizzard conditions hit the Peak District. Western Power Distribution said 9,000 homes were affected in north Derbyshire, between Buxton and Chesterfield.

A spokeswoman said: "They've had particularly bad winds and a lot of airborne debris has come into contact with overhead lines. They've also had a lot of snow in the area which is making it difficult for our engineers to get about."

She said the firm had brought in a number of extra 4x4 vehicles to help staffget around the area and had a helicopter standing by to help identify the damageonce the snow abated.
