Helicopters are combing North Yorks Moors for snow damaged power lines

Spotter helicopters are combing the North Yorkshire Moors to find snow-damaged power lines which have left hundreds cut off. More than 1,000 homes remain without power after wintry storms felled overhead electricity cables. Engineers have been working round the clock to repair the damage.

Power has been restored to approximately 78,000 properties in Yorkshire since power cuts struck on Tuesday night. The number of properties still without power now stands at 1,700, a Northern Powergrid spokesman said.

Last night, the mercury plunged -4C in Ravensworth in North Yorkshire but no new snowfall is expected today.
