MP's challenge for mountain rescue team

Gruelling challenge for Dan Jarvis Credit: PA

Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley Central, is taking part in the Marsden to Edale Trigger Race today in support of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. The race takes him from Marsden, over Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder to Edale - that's more than 20 miles, with over 4,500 feet of ascent.

Mr Jarvis completed the 'Grin n Bear It' fell race last year in aid of the same cause. This year he will again be running in the Virgin Money London Marathon in aid of Cancer Research UK. He said he wanted to highlight the important work carried out by the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge .... albeit with some trepidation. There's nothing like a trek across the Peak District to refresh you after a long week in Westminster, but I have to confess the amount of preparation I have done has been limited!"

"The rescue team do a great job in all weathers helping out those who have got into difficulties. That people are prepared to volunteer to do this job and to go out, often at very short notice, is hugely to their credit. I look forward to supporting their work again in the future."
