Halifax to welcome Yorkshire Regiment

More than 130 troops from The Yorkshire Regiment will take to the streets of Halifax today to exercise their Freedom of the Borough.

The event also marks the 70th anniversary of the granting of the Freedom of Calderdale to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, which is now part of the Yorkshire Regiment.

The parade also coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, in which 'The Dukes' were heavily involved, along with other Yorkshire regiments.

Before the soldiers from the 1st Battalion (1 YORKS) exercise their right to the march through Halifax 'with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed', the Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Lisa Lambert, will unveil a plaque in a private ceremony in the Town Hall as a permanent memorial to the granting of the Freedom.
