The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull has received an "exciting" bequest from the estate of Sussex philanthropist Ian Askew, whose grandfathers lived and worked in Hull.

The 1777 portrait of ‘Maria from Sterne’ by Joseph Wright of Derby will form a major highlight of the Ferens displays when the gallery opens in January 2017, at the start of the City of Culture year.

Wright was one of the most distinguished British landscape and portrait painters of the 18th century,.

The gallery first learnt of Mr Askew’s intentions almost 30 years ago when he contacted the then curator, John Bradshaw, to flag his wish to gift the painting to the city.
