Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson will not stand in the next General Election, his office has confirmed.

The former Cabinet minister has been in Parliament since 1997 and held a string of top ministerial posts in the New Labour years.

It follows Prime Minister Theresa May's announcement that a snap General Election will be held on June 8 pending a vote in the Commons tomorrow.
