An £8 million leisure complex opens at De Montfort University in Leicester today.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre spans over 4,000 square feet. Visitors will have access to a six lane swimming pool, a sports hall hall that can hold up to 800 people, and a 15ft climbing wall.](http://www.london2012.com/)

The original proposal for the centre sparked a campaign to save the 180-year-old Bowstring Bridge and the Pump and Tap pub from demolition.

The landmark pub and bridge were knocked down in November 2009.

A local swimming club will be helping to open the leisure centre, as 12 children attempt to swim the equivalent of the English Channel and back to raise money for the LOROS hospice.
