The Mayor of Leicester will today announce where authorised traveller camps will be built in and around the city.
It follows a public consultation by the city council about plans for three possible sites.
Sir Peter Soulsby says there is a desperate need for official traveller accommodation after years of disruption caused by illegal encampments in the city. He said there had been 115 unauthorised camps in the past three years.
The council is considering sites at Greengate Lane and Beaumont Way in Beaumont Leys and Red Hill Way in Mowmacre Hill, providing a total of 26 pitches.
Around 1500 people have responded to the consultation since February. There have been also several petitions against the proposals signed by thousands of residents. Last March, hundreds of people packed into Beaumont Leys leisure centre for a public meeting about the plans. There were angry scenes and Sir Peter Soulsby was heckled by members of the audience.
An announcement is due at noon today.
