Shopkeepers in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, where there has been major disruption because of tram works, have reacted with anger and disbelief at being told there is to be yet more upheaval.

National Grid are to carry out gas maintenance work in parts of the town in the New Year. One of the areas affected is the Square shopping precinct which has just undergone a major facelift but will now have to be dug up again.

It comes after two years of work on Nottingham's new £570m tram extension, which has turned much of Beeston town centre into a building site.

Many businesses have struggled to survive because road closures have had such a serious impact on trade.

Stephen Kitch, of McCullochs Jewellers, on the Square, says his turnover has fallen by 30% since the tram works begun.

He said "it beggars belief" that the gas work could not be carried out at the same time as the other work.

Beeston Business Improvement District, a company which promotes the town, also criticised the timing.

National Grid could not give a start date for the work or say how long it would take.
