Investigation to begin after large spider found in vodka bottle

An investigation has been launched by the manufacturers of a bottle of vodka found with a spider inside.

Luke Millard from Bourneville in Birmingham bought three bottles of Smirnoff Gold from a nearby cash and carry to give as Christmas presents.

But before the 30-year-old could wrap them, his partner noticed the creep-crawly lurking at the bottom of the bottle.

I know tequila has a worm in it, but I don’t think that spider is supposed to be there.

We bought the drinks as Christmas presents about three weeks ago, but then my partner spotted the spider – and it was a big one.

We haven’t got a clue how it got in there – the bottle was totally sealed. No way were we going to drink out of that.

The company behind the Smirnoff brand, Diageo, sent a £40 voucher to Luke after his complaint, and plan to investigate how the spider came to be in the bottle.

They’ve sent me a padded box to send back the bottle and said it could take three months.

My concern is all the bottles are from the same batch. Have any others got foreign bodies inside?

Diageo said the bottle was produced and packaged in Santa Vittoria in Italy.

The investigation into this bottle is ongoing by our dedicated quality assurance team.

We have apologised for any distress that may have been caused to the consumer and have also given him some vouchers for a replacement bottle.
