Man remanded on murder charge over shooting

A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering a teenager who was shot as he sat in a car in Ladywood, Birmingham.

Dean Silvera, who was arrested on Tuesday, appeared in a secure dock at Birmingham Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing on Thursday.

Silvera, of Stamford Grove in Perry Barr, Birmingham, who wore a dark grey and red Adidas hoodie top, stood flanked by security officers and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and give an address.

He was remanded back into custody to appear at the city's Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on May 9.

Silvera is charged with murdering 18-year-old Kenichi Phillips, known as Nichies, as the teenager sat in a black Seat Leon car in St Marks Crescent in Ladywood just before 7pm on March 17.

Chairman of the bench Rukhsana Khan told Silvera:

A 17-year-old youth who was arrested by West Midlands Police detectives in April has already been charged with Kenichi's murder.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder the day after the shooting remains on police bail, pending further inquiries.
