A forklift truck driver has walked free after 4,000 tonnes of cheese came down on him, trapping him for eight hours in Market Drayton.

West Midlands Ambulance Service were called to Edwards Transport, in Hatton Road, at 9.40am on Friday morning.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:

“One patient was treated at the scene for the effects of shock while fire and ambulance staff assessed the situation so that a rescue attempt could be mounted.

“Astonishingly, after so long trapped under the contents of the warehouse, the worker was able to walk out of the warehouse. He was then assessed by the paramedics from HART and was subsequently taken to Princess Royal Hospital as a precaution, but he appears uninjured.

“This is an excellent example of interagency cooperation that demonstrates the value of close cooperation and joint working.”
