An Indian music choir held a minute's silence to remember Labour MP Jo Cox who was shot dead in Yorkshire.

The tribute was paid during an event to celebrate the first anniversary of the British Carnatic Choir (BCC), a singing group inspired by the sounds of South Indian classical music.

The ceremony which was held at Bournville Gardens Retirement Village in Birmingham was attended by dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Coventry.

Addressing the audience Dr Ramakrishnan said:

“I cannot believe just how far we’ve come in a year. I’m ever so proud of our achievements. "The BCC aims to create and explore choral singing in South Indian classical music in the UK. With a key focus on children and young adults with a passion to connect through music, the British Carnatic Choir aims to transcend this genre of music across the UK and beyond and to diverse communities."

"Well done to all those behind the success of the British Carnatic Choir on the first milestone. May this concept continue to flourish and enrich further the understanding and awareness of our multicultural, diverse society. It is through such kinds of music that we can promote unity, peace and togetherness."

– Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Carl Rice
