A “beautiful and lovely” teenager was found hanged at a YMCA hostel in Birmingham.

Student Tia Cannings was discovered dead by staff at the youth charity’s base in Watson Close, Sutton Coldfield. There were no suspicious circumstances.

Grieving friends paid tribute to the popular 18-year-old, who was said to have brightened the lives of all who knew her.

Rebecca Wilkes wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to Tia:

You were such a lovely person, always happy and putting smiles on people’s faces.

You will be dearly missed.

You’re in a better place now and will always be in our hearts.

Her Year 2 teacher at Greenholm, Sarah Stonestreet, wrote on the Facebook page:

I will always remember that cheeky little, gorgeous girl I had the pleasure to teach. She has never been forgotten and I have very special memories of that very special class – the last one I taught before I left.

I have been completely stunned and saddened by the tragic news and my thoughts go out to all of you who are affected; her family and friends.

Although I have not seen or spoken to Tia in years other than through Facebook, I have enjoyed seeing her grow into a beautiful young lady and cannot believe she is gone.

– Sarah Stonestreet,

Birmingham Coroner’s Court heard Tia’s body was found when a cleaner raised the alarm after being unable to enter her room on the morning of March 24.

Another member of staff was called and the teenager was discovered hanged inside.

A post-mortem examination revealed Miss Cannings died as a result of cerebral anoxia as a result of hanging.

Coroner Louise Hunt recorded a conclusion of suicide.
