Plans to extend the time limit to fill in a former quarry have been approved by Walsall Council.

Some residents were strongly opposed to the plans, saying a bad smell comes from the Highfields South Quarry site which has been filled with non-hazardous waste since 2010.

The owners say they have tried to minimise the impact on the local area.

In a statement to ITV News Central the council said:

Infilling of the site is not yet complete because household recycling rates have increased significantly since planning permission was first granted. This has meant that less waste has been tipped than had been planned and the site is not yet in a condition suitable for restoring and opening to the public.
