Teenage girl 'driver' behind mother and daughter killing

Nottingham Crown Court has heard that a teenage girl - who cannot be named for legal reasons - was 'the driver' behind the killing of a mother and daughter at their home in Spalding in Lincolnshire.

Elizabeth Edwards and her 13-year-old daughter Katie were found dead in their beds in April. A teenage boy has already pleaded guilty to their murder.

The judge, Mr Justice Haddon Cave, began today's proceedings by asking the court to reflect on the fact that today would have been Katie Edwards 14th birthday.

In a closing statement, the prosecutor Peter Joyce QC told the jury that the killings had been planned repeatedly, and described the actions of the 14-year-old girl as 'callous and cold':

The girl's defence lawyer Andrew Stubbs QC described her as vulnerable, and said her responsibility for the killings was reduced by a mental disorder.

The trial continues.
