A teenager died in a New Year’s Day road tragedy – barely an hour after writing on Facebook: “Who’s out? We’ll pick you up.”

Travis Jones, from Cannock , was a passenger in a Honda Civic which smashed into trees at around 9.40pm on Sunday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene in Cannock Road, Pillaton.

A string of tributes were paid to the 18-year-old after the tragedy.

His family said in a statement: "Travis will be loved and missed by all his family and friends."

Tarek Mahmood wrote on Facebook: “RIP Trav Jones, taken from us all way too early.

“You will never be forgotten.”

Ryan New added: “RIP Trav. No-one deserves to be taken this early.”

Nathan Thomas wrote: “Don’t know what to do.

“Been crying since this morning.

“Love you cousin, we will meet again.”

Kelsey Hughes said: “Heaven has gained another young angel.

“He truly was loved by so many people, so hard reading this.”

And Alex Hartwell said: “I’ll carry out your name until I hear and see you again brother.

“RIP Trav Jones.”

Mr Jones used his Facebook page to ask whether any of his friends were available at 8.25pm on Sunday.

His devastated family were being supported by specialist police officers.

Insp Jonathan Staite, of Staffordshire Police , appealed for witnesses.

He said: “Sadly, despite the efforts of passers-by and medical staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service, the front seat passenger, an 18-year-old local male, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Specialist officers are supporting the family of the male at this difficult time.

“Officers are keen to trace any witnesses who saw the collision itself or who saw the grey Honda Civic before the collision.
