Paul Farrelly has told ITV Central's political programme that the Stoke by-election won't be about Europe but about the NHS.

The Labour MP Newcastle-under-Lyme made the comment on Central Lobby during a debate following Tristram Hunt's resignation.

The former MP for Stoke-on-Trent Centrel, Tristram Hunt resigned from his seat last week to take over running the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Listen to what Mr Farrelly had to say during the debate:

Tristram Hunt's decision has forced a by-election but as one of Jeremy Corbyn's harshest critics, it leaves the Labour party in a difficult position.

UKIP are snapping at the heels of Labour in Stoke-on-Trent Central.

They came second there in the last general election and since then the city has become known as the Brexit capital after almost 70% voted to leave the EU in the referendum.

Yesterday a source within the party told ITV's Political Correspondent Alison Mackenzie that Paul Nuttall - the UKIP leader will be their candidate.

You can watch the debate on Central Lobby on ITV at 10:40pm tonight.
