Rise in attacks on ambulance staff

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) say they are seeing an increase in assaults on their staff.

The new figures come as a victim speaks out about his own ordeal after being attacked by a patient last month.

Ray Wooley was one of three EMAS employees assaulted following a call out in the early hours of July 8th. Ray describes what happened:

A man was jailed for six months for the attack.

There were 133 assaults on staff from April 2016 to March 2017 while there have been 82 attacks from April this year to now, with EMAS telling us they expect that figure to eclipse 133 once the busy festive period ahead is taken into account.

We face the physical assaults, as in this particular case, but we also see an increase in the number of verbal and physical threats against our staff which we are then having to deal with.

EMAS hope raising awareness of the problem will lead to a reduction of assaults on their team over the coming months.
