Bus driver appears in court over fatal city centre crash

A 79-year-old bus driver has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Kailash Chander, who was once the Mayor of Leamington, was at the wheel of a double decker bus which crashed into a supermarket in Coventry in October 2015.

7-year-old Rowan Fitzgerald, a passenger on the bus and 76-year-old Dora Hancox, a pedestrian, were both killed.

Chander, from Leamington Spa, also faces two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving whilst bus operator Midland Red (South) Ltd has been charged with two health and safety breaches.

Chander was granted unconditional bail and will appear at Warwick Crown Court on 6 October.
