Ashes winner: 'Ali and Woakes can prove they're world class'

Former England bowler Ashley Giles has backed Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali and Warwickshire’s Chris Woakes to compensate for the absence of star player Ben Stokes in this winter’s Ashes in Australia.

Stokes hasn’t travelled with the squad after being arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm in a Bristol nightclub in September.

His absence is a huge blow for England’s chances of retaining the Ashes and more will now be required of Ali and Woakes.

But Giles, who won the Ashes in 2005 before being part of a squad that suffered a 5-0 whitewash just over a year later is confident the pair can perform.

I think it’s a chance for both of them to lay down a marker as genuine all-rounders in world cricket.

You might say Mo already is given his record, it’s a fantastic record. But to win an Ashes series in Australia and play a big part in that as an all-rounder would be fantastic for both Ali and Woakes.

Woakes took 6-55 against a Cricket Australia XI in England’s final warm-up game before the first test in Brisbane. Moeen is making his first appearance of the tour after struggling with a side strain.
