A man has died after an 'explosion' at a factory the early hours of this morning (12 December).

The industrial accident happened at Timet UK metal plant in Holford Road, Witton, Birmingham, at around 2.45am.

Group Commander Steve Harris, of West Midlands Fire Service, said:

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, his friends and colleagues following this tragic incident.

It would appear that the incident involved the fracture of coolant pipes. The nature of the material involved meant we had to tackle the fire in specialist suits, using dry power rather than water.

At one stage we had around 30 firefighters at the scene, but our resources have now been scaled down. We expect to be at the premises at least into this afternoon. Our specialist fire investigators will be working closely with West Midlands Police, as well as with the Health and Safety Executive who will be carrying out a full inquiry.

West Midlands Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating.

Police and other emergency services were called to the incident at Timet UK, on Witton Industrial Estate in Holford Road, Birmingham just before 3am this morning.

Officers attended the incident following reports a cooling pipe had burst.

No further details are available at this stage and the matter is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive. A cordon has been put in place around the site. No other premises were evacuated.
