Woman who contracted a rare form of measles speaks about her experience

A woman has spoken of her experience with measles after she contracted the disease earlier this month.

23-year-old Ellie Roscoe from Harborne, Birmingham was left seriously ill in hospital after her rash and fever, she says, was misdiagnosed by her GP twice. She eventually became more unwell and was taken to Heartland's Hospital by her mother where she was put into isolation.

Public health officials are warning people to check they are fully vaccinated against the measles with cases of the rare illness rising in the West Midlands.

Measles symptoms to be aware of include:

  • High fever

  • Sore, red, watery eyes

  • Coughing

  • Aching and feeling generally unwell

  • A blotchy red-brown rash, which usually appears after the initial symptoms
