Mother and two sons among five people missing in Leicester explosion

Police say a mother and her two sons are among the five people missing in the explosion which ripped through a shop in Leicester.

Mary Rajoobeer, 46, and her two sons Shane, 18, and Sean, 17, who lived in the flat above the supermarket which was destroyed in the explosion, are unaccounted for.

Leah Beth Reek, 18, who is Shane’s girlfriend, is also missing, as is 22-year-old Viktorija Ljevleva who is thought to have been working in the Polish supermarket at the time of the explosion on Hinckley Road on Sunday night.

Police say human remains relating to five people have been recovered from the wreckage, but say the devastation caused by the blast and subsequent fire means it may be some time before the bodies can be formally identified.

The relatives of all five missing people have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Work is continuing at the scene in Hinckley Road as part of the rescue operation after the explosion which happened shortly after 7pm on Sunday night.

Meanwhile a fundraising page has been set up to help support those affected by the tragedy.
