Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a police constable was taken to hospital with serious injuries after he was 'deliberately driven at by a car'.
Armed offices responded to a call at around 3:30am after a report a man had been assaulted by a group of men in Belvoir Street in Leicester city centre, who left the scene in a Volkswagen Polo.
The officer, who was carrying out inquiries in nearby Bradbourne Road following the initial report of an assault, was struck by a white Mercedes at around 4:30am, during attempts to stop the vehicle. Officers say information was received about the Mercedes having been seen in Belvoir Street shortly after the assault and an occupant was reported to have also been seen with a suspected firearm. The Mercedes was found just after 9:00am in the area of Portsmouth Road.
Four men who were arrested in connection with the initial alleged assault incident in Belvoir Street have been released pending further investigations.
