Motorists are advised to avoid the northbound carriageway of the M1 motorway after a report that two people had been found injured.
Earlier today, the M1 was closed in both directions between junction 21 A5460 in Leicester and junction 22 A50 - Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
Two people were found injured on the carriageway. One person has since been pronounced dead and the second is in a critical condition.
Three lanes on the southbound and two lanes on the northbound have since been re-opened.
It is believed no vehicles were involved - but according to the Leicestershire Police, the investigation is still in its early stages.
The police is urging anyone with information to come forward.
