Police are searching for a kayaker who has gone missing off the coast of Dorset.

Alistair Collier, 60, was last seen taking part in a race off Studland at midday on Saturday. He was spotted at the beginning of the race near the pier, but hasn't been seen since. Police are appealing for the public's help in finding him.

Around 15 kayakers were taking part in the event and Mr Collier was reported missing about half way through the race.

The Coastguard is coordinating the search with two RNLI lifeboats, a helicopter and the police involved.

Mr Collier is white, five feet two inches tall and of medium build. He has brown eyes, black greying hair, a goatee, and speaks with a northern accent. He was wearing a red life jacket.

He was in a white canoe with stabiliser and a blue stripe on top.

The search for Alistair is continuing, but unfortunately we have not been able to find him. We are urging anyone who has seen a man matching Alistair's description or his kayak since this afternoon to contact us.

– Chief Inspector Heather Dixey, Dorset Police

There is an extensive search of the area being carried out between the start of the race at Knowle Beach and Swanage pier. The weather conditions aren’t good – the sea is quite rough and we are concerned for this kayaker’s safety.

– Duty controller Duncan Ley, HM Coastguard

Anyone with information or knowledge as to Alistair's whereabouts is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting incident number 6:284.
